I have a love-hate relationship with bookshelves. I love them because they can really compliment a space when they are styled right. I hate them because they can also become a place that junk accumulates and styling them can sometimes be tricky. In our former home, we had two built-in bookshelves on each side of our tv. I always felt like they either had too much stuff on them or not enough. Finding the right balance was difficult. Over the years, I have learned a few things that have made bookshelf styling much easier and I will be sharing those today.
When styling shelves, there’s no right or wrong way, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Don’t be afraid of open space. You don’t have to cover every inch of space on your shelving. By leaving a bit of space, your accessories pop.
I also consider the height of my items. Don’t place items of the same height side by side. It’s also best to have items of multiple heights grouped together. Varying heights prevents your eyes from being drawn to one place.
Mix horizontal and vertical objects together. If you’re displaying a bunch of books, be sure to arrange some vertically and then stack some horizontally to break things up. The same concept can be applied to other accessories as well.
Think even vs. odd numbers. Some symmetry is good, but you don’t want every single shelf symmetrical. If some of your accessories are arranged symmetrically, mix it up by placing other accessories in odd numbers like 3, 5 and 7.
Consider adding something living to your shelves. A touch of greenery is always nice. Succulents can be great for bookshelves.
Sometimes wider shelves can be harder. Approach these by dividing your shelf into 3 imaginary sections and accessorize as if that imaginary divider was actually there.
STYLING ACCESSORIES
Books are always a safe accessory, they are called bookshelves for a reason! If you want to create a cleaner look, I suggest either grouping books by color or picking one or two color books and using those colors only.
Wanting books of a specific color? Some great resources for books are thrift shops and stores like Goodwill. If you’re lucky enough to have a Half Priced Books near you, they have a section of color-coded books. You are able to fill an entire box for $50. Who knew!!!
Vases and Jars are nice to use and you can find them in many sizes and heights. Plants, small framed art, candles, and trays also make great accessories for shelving.
Marshalls and TJ Maxx are great places to shop for accessories that won’t cost a fortune. If you’re lucky enough to have a full-size Home Goods nearby, then you can find tons of options there!
Here are some home accessories that would be perfect for bookshelves.
