My hubby and I just returned from our anniversary vacation at the Unico 20 87 resort. Unico 20 87 opened last Spring and is an all-inclusive resort in Riviera Maya. The property is an adults-only hotel with under 500 guestrooms. Unico has five onsite restaurants, three pools (one being a quiet pool), spa and several bars throughout the property including two swim-up bars. I would definitely say that the hotel is geared towards a younger crowd (20’s and 30’s) and the atmosphere reflects that but, I’d like to think there is something for everyone there. There are rooms that are located on a quieter side that are more private but they also have swim-up rooms facing the pool where all the activities happen.
Look at the paw prints on the sidewalk to the beach walkover!
We’ve been to Mexico A LOT so we are pretty familiar with what to expect. I will say, Unico was a beautiful resort. The decor is so pretty, a touch of rustic mixed with modern. The rooms were comfortable and well appointed and the swim up suites are a nice option to have.
Part of your reservation package at Unico includes spa treatments, golf, and local tours. We visited the spa twice during our stay and enjoyed it. Our first treatment was the couples massage and it was more of a relaxation massage. I tend to prefer deep tissue massages, but again it was very relaxing. On our second spa visit, we did the Esencia Massage or “four hands” massage where two therapists work on you in tandem. This was amazing. Julia and Celia were my therapists and they did a super job. I would highly recommend this service. Take a peek at the pretty spa below.
Dining
The onsite dining options consist of Italian, Mexican, Sushi/Teppanyaki, a Steakhouse, and poolside grill. Let me preface this by saying, we live in Houston which is known for some of the best food in the U.S. and that has made us somewhat of food snobs…..So when we travel (even inside the U.S.), we know it’s hard to beat our local dining options. Traveling to Mexico, we’ve only had two or three stays where we’ve been impressed with the food. That being said, we know this up front and don’t expect to be wowed by the meals. Just being honest here, but the food was definitely lacking a lot for us. I won’t get into all that because you’re either a foodie or not. Just something to know and consider in advance.
I fell in love with these swings in the 20 87 restaurant!!!!
Service
Everyone was friendly and helpful when we needed something. The resort does have an app they encourage you to use for booking everything from room housekeeping, spa appointments, room service, dinner reservations, and concierge services. Although the app was super easy to navigate, when using the app, the staff did not always seem to get a notification, which meant some of our requests were never received or were incorrect. That part was a bummer because again, the app made it super convenient to schedule things at our leisure. With that being said, when we worked directly with the hotel, our requests were met.
Shopping
Unico 20 87 has several shops on premises and the decor and displays did not disappoint.
How cute are the jewelry displays!
One of the services they offer is monogramming items like beach bags, hats, and their signature bathrobes. They will even make personalized items for wedding parties and events, which are so fun and a great way for guests to remember your special day. You can also find handpainted goods like journals, ornaments, and hats.

Here are a few more spaces from the resort.
You guys! Those beams!
This was the coffee shop offering pastries and a full coffee bar
We had a wonderful trip. It’s always such a nice mental break to get away for a few days. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about the aesthetics, cleanliness, and decor of this property. I will sum it up by saying the food was really the only part I would give a thumbs down to. Again, I have personally found that to be the case in most Mexico resorts (especially all-inclusive properties), so it was not a deal breaker. Would I return? Let me just be blunt here, for a few days of uninterrupted time with my husband, I’d stay anywhere. Unico 20 87 was a beautiful resort and I would like to hope that as a newer property, things will improve. In the meantime, if given the option, I’d probably be more likely to return to Banyan Tree Mayakoba or Belmond Maroma because our experiences at both resorts were super! Any fans of the show Nashville??? Let’s put it this way, Connie Britton was our next door neighbor at the Belmond, so if it’s good enough for Rayna James, it’s gotta be good right?! 😉
Until next time,
Kelly
