My son leaves for college as a freshman in a few weeks, and although I am still in denial, I have started working on getting his stuff packed. Since he will be out of state, I wanted to make sure he had a well stocked medicine and first aid kit. He will have access to the campus health center, but I wanted him to have a good assortment of necessities on hand in case he was sick and not up for a trip to the store. To keep things organized, I made two separate kits using a first aid bag and clear tackle box for meds. I also included a cheat sheet with some notes and labeled any generic meds with the brand name as well.
Don’t forget to include a copy of your child’s medical insurance card and make sure they understand how their copay works for sick visits/urgent care, etc. Since my son recently turned 18, I also made sure to get a notarized Medical Power of Attorney signed so we could make medical decisions on his behalf in the event of an emergency. Since laws vary by state, I suggest verifying what forms would be required/accepted in the state they’ll be attending school. Hopefully, you won’t ever need them but better to be prepared than not!
Here’s what I included in the First Aid Kit….
