I love fresh flowers and I love hydrangeas but what I hate about hydrangeas is how quick they wilt. Over the years, I’ve tried a lot of things to keep them fresh longer. I’ve done the boiled water method, the ice cube trick, soaking the entire bunch, cutting a slit in the stems, you name it, I’ve probably tried it. The problem was all of these are a pain. I mean who wants to have to revive their flowers every 1-2 days? Not me! I even stopped buying them for a while because I was over it. That was until I stumbled across an article from a florist who shared her hydrangea trick from her years in the biz. Guess what she suggested? Alum powder. And it’s SO EASY. Next time you buy hydrangeas, grab a bottle of alum from your grocer’s baking aisle and that’s all you need.
When arranging your flowers, trim ends of stems at an angle and wet them. Next, dip your stems in alum powder 1/2-1 inch up the stems.
Then arrange in your vase filled with water. Be sure to change water daily.
That’s it, easy peasy!
