It’s always fun to surprise your loved ones, especially your tween daughter with a room makeover! A while back, I mentioned how we surprised both of our kiddos with room makeovers. I shared my son’s room here. Both rooms were a hit and our kids were totally surprised.
Today, I am sharing the changes we made to my daughter’s room. (I wasn’t blogging at the time, so the pictures are not the best, sorry.) This project took a few days to complete and I love how everything turned out. Since it was a surprise, I couldn’t really ask her what she wanted, but I did know she wanted a turquoise and gold room. Because I like rooms that feel open and airy, I knew two things I did not want when I started….I didn’t want a dark shade of turquoise and I did not want all four walls painted.
With kids, I really like to try to plan rooms that can grow with them. Even though my daughter may love turquoise now, in two years, she may be over that color. It’s much easier to repaint one accent wall than an entire room. Finding the right shade of blue wasn’t as easy as I thought, but in the end, I found one I really liked and she ended up loving it! The wall color we used is Rivers Edge by Behr.
Just like we did in our son’s room, we also painted her window trim white and the grids or “muntins” black. It really updated the room and getting rid of the dark stained windows made the room feel so much brighter and open. I just love this look and we will be doing this to all of our windows downstairs when our reno starts. The black paint used on the window grids is Iron Ore by Benjamin Moore.
She already had her bed, so all we needed were linens to incorporate the turquoise and gold theme. I used this fun reversible duvet from PB Teen and a few throw pillows and her bed was done. We also purchased two new nightstands and a fun accent chair for the corner.
Again, back to the idea that turquoise might not always be her favorite color, I tried to keep all the main furniture pieces like her bed, desk, and nightstands a neutral color that would go with anything now or later. To incorporate the turquoise she wanted, I tried to keep it to pillows, a few bookshelf accessories, and her new accent chair. This accomplishes the goal but also makes it easier to switch out down the road and is much more affordable also.
Both kids needed a study area, so we created a small desk space off to the side, where she could do her homework. I love her acrylic ghost chair! I also added gold vinyl dots to her turquoise accent wall and a few small art prints.
One of her favorite accessories in the room was her light box. She loves it and uses it all the time to display messages and sayings.
One of my favorite parts of the room makeover…….. the roman shades. I love the clean, simplicity of them and they are practical because they will go with any room theme or colors later down the road. I also love her tube base table lamps. They are sleek and clean and don’t feel heavy on the nightstands.
